SPECIAL REPORT: Why Your Children, Wards Need To Attend Admiralty University Of Nigeria

The desire for individuals and corporate organizations to raise the bar in the education sector, has driven many to establish several higher institutions with the aim of lifting the falling standard of education in Nigeria.

Also, parents and guardians are in search of institutions that would not only award paper qualifications (Intellectuals) to their children and wards, but a place where they will be moulded in character and are positioned to compete favourably with their counterparts anywhere in the world.

In Delta State, Nigeria, a school that would answer the multitude or unending questions and quests of parents and guardians or individuals with the desire to have quality education and character moulding of their students, has been setup to meet the yearnings of the 21st century, especially as contained in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Come with me as I introduce you to Admiralty University of Nigeria, with the acronym (ADUN), sited along the Ibuza-Ogwashi-Uku road, Oshimili south and Aniocha south local government areas of Delta State.

The Vice Chancellor/President, Admiralty University of Nigeria, Prof. Paul Omojo Omaji, who ushered in the Executives and members, Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel (ICC), of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, into the workings of the school on 10th August 2020, said the motto of the Nigerian Navy, one of the major owners of Admiralty University of Nigeria, “Onward Together”, has become a driving force for excellence in the institution.

Aspiration to be a world class University

The vision of the University is to become a world class institution of learning where students who passed through the system would compete favourably with their counterparts anywhere around the world. Be it Harvard University, University of Pathways, University of Birmingham, Covenant University, Landmark University, Novena University or any other University either public or private in Nigeria.

Corroborating the writer’s position, the Vice Chanellor said, the vision of the University is to become a world class not only to match the standard of the world but to excel unlike what is obtainable in other Universities.

Hear him: “In our own case, what we understand is the ability not to only match the standard of the world but to excel and go beyond the standard. It is an aspiration that we set for ourselves. We set a very high aspiration so that it can energize us in our day to day work”.

According to him, it is not necessarily a comparative yardstick for them, but “It is an aspirational yardstick. We want to be world class, that means our bar is set so high and we need to work hard to attain that bar.

Like the artist who brings pictorials to reality, the management of the University have on their chests, the motto of the institution which has further propelled them in the day-to-day running of the school.

His words: “The motto of the University is Excellent in Education. And because of the global arising, the picture we paint for ourselves is that this University is a Global University Educating Luminary Leaders (GUELL), because we do know that in Nigeria, one of the main challenges this nation faces, is leadership.

“So, our commitment here is that we are not just filling the students here with intellectual knowledge but we are helping them to cultivate their leadership potentials so that they can be assets to their local communities, to the state, to the nation and to the world”.

The University’s projection is to see its graduates competing and standing on international platforms and becoming role models to their own generations, hence, Omaji, said: “We expect to see many of them that graduates from here in years to come standing in the countries of the world and in multilateral organizations, UN, UNESCO, WHO, WTO. We have a model here, Ngozi Okonjo-iwela, competing for the DG of WTO. We want to have many of them who will be competing on the world stage for such positions”.

Putting more concrete on their aspiration to be a world class University, the school was given the approval to operate, “Admiralty University of Nigeria, was licensed by the federal government to deliver University education on December 2017. It is the first of its kind in Nigeria, in that it is a Private Public Partnership (PPP) arrangement”.

“The Nigerian Navy entered into the partnership to setup the University, so they have the higher equity shares, the Navy Holding Limited looks after the University as against the background that it is a public University, the Navy partnership and their commitment to make the University a World class one is not in doubt. It is not, it is a private University. This is how the National University Commission sees it”, he said.

ADUN’S Tuition Fee And Admission Process

Unlike other private Universities where parents and guardians have to pay up to their necks to get/give quality education to their children and wards, ADUN has a fairly and much more acceptable tuition fees and admission process.

According to the Vice Chancellor/President, “One of the things I like you to know about our fees is that each semester, we charge N280, 000 tuition. So, for the two semesters in a session, we charge N560, 000 fees. Accommodation is N50, 000 per semester. So, for the two semesters, we have N100, 000. There are other ancillary cost that are just one off payment. Everything put together, is not more than N760, 000 per session. We also allow people to pay in installments

“This University have nearly 24 hours light. We have two gigantic generating sets, one can run for 24 hours nonstop. In terms of facilities, the proprietors have done so well to lay a solid foundation for excellence in education. We have solid foundation on ground because the motto is Excellent in Education”.

The University has not less than five faculties approved by NUC, though three faculties are operational at the moment as the 2020/2021 admissions is in progress into the following degree programmes.

They are Facility of Arts and Social Sciences which has about five programmes:- BA. English, Bsc. Economics, BA. History and International Studies, Bsc. International Relations and Bsc. Tourism Studies.

Facility of Science has five programmes:- Bsc. Biology, Bsc. Cyber security, Bsc. Forensic Bsc. Science, Computer Science and Bsc. Software Engineering.

Facility of Management Science has two programmes:- Bsc. Accounting and Bsc. Business Administration.

Giving details, he said: “One of the things you need to bear in mind is that we encourage our students to take courses across the facilities. In other words, the fact that you are in science does not mean you cannot take courses in business administration, accounting, management, tourism or International Relations.

“Our students are at liberty to select courses on a semester basis from anywhere in the faculities and be able to broaden their knowledge”.

Speaking on the number of students in the school, Prof. Omaji, hinted, “We have matriculated 100 level students, we already have 200 level students, we have about 300 students.

“We do not impose Post UTME (No Application Fee POST-UTME), on anyone. 160 as JAMB cutoff and five credits in O’level. We also have scholarships for students who performed exceptionally whether in JAMB or WEACE results.

“We also have the compassionate scholarship for the indigent students who are very strong academically by way of reducing how much they are to pay and community scholarship and every year we offer scholarship to two students from our surrounding communities. Right now we are working on two communities (Ibuza and Ogwashi-Uku).

“For this particular session, one of the Community based students who actually started very late. Two/three weeks to the exams is greatly doing well. One of the lecturers confirmed that his contributions to the online lectures is fantastic”.

Eligibility:-

Minimum UTME Cut-off point of 160 and 5 0’Level Credits including MATHEMATICS and ENGLISH LANGUAGE in not more than two sittings. Candidates for two years Top-Up programmes, Direct Entry and Inter-University transfer can apply.

ADUN’S Zero Tolerance To Indiscipline, Cultism and Social Vices

The Vice Chancellor/President who took time to explain the high moral standard of the institution assured parents and guardians of their children’s safety, saying, “We don’t tolerate distractions, we don’t tolerate people who come here to live disobedient lives. When we make it known to you, it is either you fall in line with the standards that have been established here or you fall out.

“So far, we are glad to say our students have run along, 99.9% have shown the desirability to learn. You can imagine that out of over 200 students only one was expelled and that was because that one was not ready to comply with the standard of the University.

“Our discipline is very tight, we are modelling after the Navy training and we are very proud of it”, Prof. Omaji, hinted.

Under the lockdown, what ADUN’S management did that will attract you, your children and wards

The school which is less than two years old has truly gone far beyond where it started from compared to what is obtainable in other higher institutions of learning.

Omaji, hinted thus: “The school commenced on the 23rd of January 2019, because of the late commencement, the academic calendar was a little bit contracted. So, we are right now in the second semester of our second session.

“On the 23rd of March this year, the NUC directed all Universities to shutdown. We complied like a responsible corporate citizenship, we have to restrategize and find out what we could do to engage our students in terms of academic activities while on lockdown.

“Management decided that we are going to engage our students online. Some people doubted whether it could be done. Some people wonder why we were even doing that but management felt that we are moulding the destinies of many people in this place and we are not going to tour with the moulding of those destinies.

“We felt that to wait endlessly not knowing when Covid-19 will be over, was to actually compromise the destinies of these students. So, we felt it was better to engage the students. That has paid off handsomely for this University because we continued online, our students were able to complete their first semester.

“We did that in the middle of June, this year. As we speak, a number of other Universities who chose the option of waiting, many of their students have not completed one semester.

“So, here we are, haven’t done that, we needed to do something that is also unusual. You could not have given examination to students who have not matriculated because it is the matriculation that actually makes them bonafide students of the University.

“And again, management came together and refused to be intimidated by the enormity of the issue and we decided that we are going to conduct our matriculation online, which we did.

“We matriculated 100 students through zoom. Connected with them wherever they were and gave them the opportunity to take the matriculation oath and by that very action, they became bonafide members of the University and therefore were entitled to all the things of learning that the University will offer.

Today, they have completed their first semester and we commenced our second semester last week. Online course registration was taken and this week, we have commenced online lectures.

“Again, we take our lives and the lives of those who visit us very seriously here. That foot pedder hand washing machine that you saw and used was constructed by a staff of this University. Everything you are seeing there was sourced internally, the only thing we brought from outside was the sink.

“It is a very young University but we have people who have committed themselves to excellent”.

Highpoint of the media chat was accompanied with a tour of ADUN’S facilities which includes a well equipped medical center, fully equipped Library, Physics and Biology laboratories, Staff quarter for efficient service delivery, female and male hostels, lecture theatre amongst others.
