The Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), has enrolled 240 women under its Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, as part of its quest to reach the grassroot.

This was made possible courtesy of Hon. Barr. Chief John Obukohwo Nani, Chairman, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

The event took place on Sunday April 28, 2024, at the Urhobo Cultural House, Okere Road, Warri South local government area of the State.

The health insurance was procured for women who were drawn from the 24 kingdoms of Urhobo ethnicity.

Addressing the women, the DESOPADEC Chairman, said he was motivated to purchase the health insurance for the women having realized that many women still could not afford quality healthcare service delivery.

While soliciting for support for what the Commission is doing, he charged the women and Deltans for their cooperation in order for the scheme to succeed.

He expressed hope that with the move, well to do Deltans and organizations would follow suit to purchase health insurance for vulnerable Deltans to get quality healthcare.

“I have been told that other ethnic nationalities in Delta State are getting the health insurance card and knowing full well that we have vulnerable persons who cannot get the card, I decided to give for the first phase.

“Ten each to the 24 kingdoms in Urhobo and that will give you 240, that is what I just did and I gave N2 million for both logistics for them to come here and collect the cards.

“As time goes on as God helps me I will do more and I am also asking those well meaning Urhobos, women and men to contribute to the indigent old women who cannot go to the hospital because of finance”, he said.

In his address, Olorogun Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the scheme who could not hide his joy, appreciated Nani, for the philanthropic gesture.

“I stand before you today with a heart full of gratitude and joy as we gather for the flag-off of the registration for health insurance coverage of 240 indigent and vulnerable persons in Delta state. It is a truly momentous occasion, one that highlights the power of compassion and generosity in transforming the lives of those in need.

“I am immensely delighted to celebrate the remarkable generosity and compassion of a great philanthropist, Hon. Barr. Chief John Obukohwo Nani who has set a shining example for all to follow.

“The adoption and purchase of health insurance for 240 vulnerable individuals from the 24 Kingdoms of Urhobo Nation in response to the clarion call of the Director-General of DSCHC, Olorogun Dr. Isaac Akpoveta to all people of goodwill to key into the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative of the commission, is not just an act of charity; it is a demonstration of profound empathy and a tangible commitment to the well-being of our people”.

He explained that “the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, pioneered by Olorogun Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, the Director General of Delta State Contributory Health Commission, aims to ensure that every resident especially the indigents, regardless of their socio-economic status, has access to quality healthcare.

“It is heartwarming to see the spirit of solidarity and community support exemplified by this gentleman, whose noble gesture will provide essential healthcare coverage for those who need it most.

“With just N7000 per person you can purchase our health insurance card for your neighbor in need to access quality health care throughout the year. This is exactly what John Nani has just done, and the reason we are here today.

“Healthcare should not be a luxury reserved for the privileged few; it is a fundamental human right that must be guaranteed to all.

“By stepping forward to adopt enrollees and purchase health insurance for the vulnerable members of your community, Hon. John Nani has demonstrated a profound understanding of this principle and shown us the power of determined action in creating positive change.

“As we witness the registration of the adoptees, I urge each and every one of us to be inspired by the selflessness and dedication of John Nani. Let us all take up the mantle of responsibility and join hands in supporting our fellow community members who are in need. There are countless ways in which we can contribute to the well-being of those around us.

“SAVE A LIFE TODAY”.
Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and dignified life. Let us seize this moment as a call to action, a reminder that our collective strength lies in our ability to care for one another and uplift those who are less fortunate.

“This is what the M.O.R.E. Agenda of the Present administration of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori stands for. Think M.O.RE. And do MORE for your neighbor”.

The National President, UPU, Women’s Wing, Dame Chief Rose Oghene, said the women were overwhelmed with the kind gesture of the DESOPADEC Chairman.

She prayed God to replenish him, “he is a caring man and he is a man that has always shown interest to fill the gap for all not just the women.

“Today, 240 women have been enrolled into the contributory health insurance scheme”, stressing that Nani, has shown capacity and has set the pace for other well to do Urhobos to follow.

Highpoint of the occasion, was the presentation of a plague to Hon. John Obukohwo Nani, as the Health Insurance Ambassador worldwide and the presentation of an appreciation letter to Nani by the women who nicknamed him, the “Helper of Urhobo Women”.
