Nine people have died and dozens more are feared trapped after an ancient Hindu temple collapsed in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rains.

Rescue efforts are in progress after a landslide struck the temple in Shimla, a well-known tourist destination.

Over the past two days, severe rain in Himachal Pradesh has resulted in floods and landslides, and there have been 21 rain-related fatalities in the last 24 hours.

The state’s chief minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who is on the scene of the landslide, warned reporters that 20 to 25 people might be buried beneath the rubble.

Sukhu appealed to the people in the state to stay indoors due to the rains.

Thousands of tourists visit the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, especially its capital Shimla, around the year to enjoy its cool weather and picturesque scenery.

Nevertheless, the state has been experiencing a lot of rain throughout the monsoon season, which has caused flooding, landslides, and cloudbursts, all of which have worsened the situation.

Over the past few days, videos have been posted on social media platforms showing buildings and cars being swept away by raging rivers, trees falling on cars, and tourists becoming stranded because of road closures.
