The Delta State Government has described Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a deliberate and patriotic move aimed at enhancing federal collaboration and fast-tracking development across the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, responded to comments made by Labour Party South-South Vice Chairman, Mr. Tony Ezeagwu, dismissing them as misleading and politically opportunistic.

Ahon clarified that the Governor’s decision was not driven by personal ambition or partisan politics, but by a broader vision to reposition Delta State within the national political landscape for greater access to federal opportunities.

“The attention of the Delta State Government has been drawn to a recent statement by Mr. Tony Ezeagwu regarding Governor Oborevwori’s official defection to the APC,” the statement began.

“While we acknowledge the rights of political actors to engage in public discourse, it is imperative to correct the misrepresentations and clarify the motivation behind the Governor’s decision.”

“Governor Oborevwori’s alignment with the ruling party at the center is a strategic move to unlock enhanced federal partnerships and development support, especially amid current economic realities.

“It is a forward-looking decision grounded in a deep commitment to the welfare of all Deltans.”

According to Ahon, the Governor’s longstanding reputation as a grassroots politician and seasoned legislator has positioned him to recognize the importance of political alignment in Nigeria’s federal structure.

“Delta State cannot afford to operate on the margins of national influence,” he noted.

He further described the defection ceremony as a dignified, inclusive event that drew stakeholders from across party lines, contrary to claims that it was a wasteful or divisive gathering.

Highlighting achievements under the MORE Agenda, Ahon stated that Oborevwori’s administration has made notable strides in infrastructure, peace-building, youth development, and social programs, with impact felt beyond political affiliations.

He criticized the Labour Party for what he described as its internal crisis and lack of coherent alternatives, urging it to focus on constructive engagement rather than futile attacks.

“Rather than vilify a step taken in the collective interest of the state, the Labour Party should address the divisions within its own ranks and present credible policies if it wishes to be seen as a viable opposition,” the statement concluded.

Governor Oborevwori, he affirmed, remains committed to serving all Deltans regardless of political affiliation, and will continue to champion unity, democratic values, and inclusive governance.
