Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has expressed full confidence in the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, describing him as the rightful leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State.
Speaking during a live television interview on Monday night, Rt Hon Guwor addressed the recent mass defection of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State to the APC.
He dismissed any notion of betrayal, emphasizing that the move was a strategic response to unresolved issues plaguing the PDP at the national level.
He cited persistent internal crises, including prolonged litigations and leadership disputes, as key factors driving the exodus. “Nobody betrayed anybody,” Guwor stated.
“The PDP at the national level is challenged with a series of litigations. Most recently, the issue of the National Secretary was decided by the Supreme Court.
Then came the merger issue, where governors met in Oyo and resolved that the party would stand alone, despite not holding a NEC meeting in over a year.”
The Speaker criticized the PDP’s lack of direction, affirming that the move to the APC was necessary for stability and progress.
Responding to claims that the defection was driven by personal interests, Guwor stressed that Delta State’s future remains the priority.
He praised Governor Oborevwori’s performance, stating that the state has become “a huge construction site” under his leadership, with numerous developmental projects underway.
Highlighting the scale of the defection, Guwor revealed that the Governor, his Deputy Sir Monday Oyeme, members of the National Assembly, the Speaker and House members, all 25 council chairmen, 500 councilors, and the PDP’s state, local government, and ward executives have officially joined the APC.
Describing the move as widely consulted and necessary, the Speaker reiterated that the transition would not result in divided interests ahead of the 2027 elections.
“All stakeholders of the APC will queue behind the Governor,” he assured.
Guwor concluded by aligning the state’s direction with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.
“There will be no factions. I am rest assured that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is capable of providing leadership in the APC,” he declared.
