… As PDP, APC stakeholders meet in Delta
Despite several denials, in a development that has sparked fresh political conversations across Delta State and beyond, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reportedly met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, to perfect his defection plans.
While details of the closed-door meeting remain undisclosed, credible sources confirm that the State Governor was among a selected group of political figures who visited Tinubu for what insiders described as “strategic political consultations.”
Governor Oborevwori, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has in recent months been at the center of speculation over a possible defection to the ruling APC.
The meeting with the President and top APC leadership appears to lend weight to the rumours, though no official statement has been released by either party.
A senior political aide close to the governor, who requested anonymity, confirm the defection claims but described the meeting as “purely in the interest of the State.”
According to him, “His Excellency remains committed to peace, development, and strategic alliances that will benefit the people of Delta State. We should avoid hasty conclusions.”
Similarly, APC officials have remained tight-lipped, refusing to speak on the record regarding the visit or any possible negotiations.
Political analysts suggest the meeting, if connected to a planned defection, could significantly reshape the political dynamics in the South-South region, particularly as Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle.
A shift of such magnitude by a sitting governor would be seen as a major win for the APC, particularly in a state traditionally controlled by the PDP.
Meanwhile, within the PDP, the silence surrounding the Governor’s high-profile meeting has raised concern among party loyalists, many of whom are seeking clarity on his political direction.
Observers note that this would not be the first time cross-party alignments have reshaped the Nigerian political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to national elections.
As of press time, neither the Presidency, the APC leadership, nor Governor Oborevwori’s media office had issued an official statement clarifying the purpose or outcome of the meeting.
In another development, impeccable sources at the Delta State Government House have revealed that a high-profile political meeting between PDP and APC stakeholders has been scheduled for today, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Government House in Asaba.
According to our sources, the meeting is aimed at reaching solid arrangements on the sharing formula for political offices ahead of the 2027 elections.
It was gathered that the APC is lobbying for the Deputy Governorship position and other strategic offices in the next dispensation, should Governor Oborevwori’s planned defection eventually succeed.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
