Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North and serving as Chancellor of the Sports University of Nigeria, has applauded Team Delta for clinching their fifth consecutive title at the just-concluded Gateway Games 2024, Nigeria’s premier National Sports Festival.

Held across multiple venues with participation from over 10,000 athletes competing in 549 events, the festival showcased the rich and diverse sporting talent from across the country.

Team Delta emerged as the undisputed champions, topping the medal chart with an impressive haul of 98 gold, 66 silver, and 80 bronze medals. Bayelsa and Ogun States followed at a distant second and third.

Senator Nwoko who is the acting Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, described the victory as a reflection of the innate talent, discipline, and competitive spirit of Nigerian youth, particularly those from Delta State.

“This win reinforces what we already know — that Nigeria is brimming with talent. But talent alone is not enough. Without early grooming, structured training, and long-term development strategies, much of that potential will go unrealized,” Nwoko said.

He emphasized the urgent need to shift from reactive sports planning to a proactive, institutionalized model that integrates athlete development from the grassroots to elite levels.

He warned against the dangers of the “fire brigade approach” often used in preparing for competitions.

“Winning nationally is commendable, but we must set our sights on continental and international success. That requires deliberate planning, long-term investments, and a culture of excellence in sports development,” he added.

As Chancellor of the Sports University of Nigeria, Nwoko reiterated the university’s role as a catalyst for change in the sector. He highlighted its mission to serve as a center of excellence for training athletes, coaches, and sports professionals, as well as conducting research that advances the science of sports performance.

“Our doors are open for partnerships, research, and continuous learning. We’re not just celebrating champions, we’re building them,” he affirmed.

Senator Nwoko called to action for sports administrators and policymakers across the country to prioritize youth development, invest in grassroots programs, and create an enabling environment for sustained success in Nigerian sports.
