In a surprising but politically significant statement, former First Lady Patience Jonathan has firmly shut down speculation about any plans to return to the Aso Rock Villa, declaring her intention to actively campaign alongside First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a public appearance, Mrs. Jonathan emphasized her long-standing personal and political relationship with Senator Tinubu, dismissing any insinuations of rivalry or opposition.

“I didn’t just know her [Oluremi Tinubu] because she’s the First Lady, no. We worked together… even when my husband was Vice President, Oluremi stood with her husband and supported us during our first election,” she said, referring to the 2011 presidential campaign of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mrs. Jonathan, known for her outspoken style and influence within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), stunned many political observers with her open endorsement of the Tinubu presidency, which stems from the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her comments suggest a softening of partisan lines and have already sparked strong reactions within both political camps.

“For me, I have a conscience. I cannot abandon my friend, whether you like it or not,” she added, in what appears to be a thinly veiled response to critics questioning her political loyalty.

Her declaration comes at a critical time, as political alignments and realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. With former President Goodluck Jonathan maintaining a more reserved public posture, Mrs. Jonathan’s vocal allegiance to the First Lady and her decision to join her campaign trail is raising eyebrows across the political spectrum.

Critics have questioned whether this signals a broader shift within elements of the PDP elite or a personal decision rooted more in friendship than political strategy.

Either way, it positions Patience Jonathan as a potentially disruptive force in the unfolding electoral dynamics.

Political analysts warn that her move could further blur party lines and test the unity of the PDP, especially among those who view Tinubu’s administration with skepticism.

Still, her influence, particularly among grassroots women’s networks, remains potent and could bolster the First Lady’s reach in southern regions.

While she made no mention of her husband’s political future, Mrs. Jonathan’s words were clear: a return to the Villa is not on her agenda, but supporting Oluremi Tinubu.
