He Didn’t Escape, He Only Jumped Bail — Police Spokesman, SP Bright

The controversy surrounding the tragic death of Shemite Bello, a former aide to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, has taken a troubling turn as the main suspect in the alleged murder, identified only as “Mr. Love,” has reportedly escaped from police custody and is currently on the run.

According to a formal update released by Chief (Bar.) Kimashinor Nwakalo-Imu, head of the Nwakalo family, Shemite’s death is now under investigation by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit after what the family described as a botched and compromised initial inquiry by the Delta State Police Command.

Mr. Love allegedly confined Shemite in a bedroom for three days, denying her access to family members or medical help before she was found dead.

The family’s petition prompted the IGP to take over the case, which has since revealed troubling new details.

A pharmacist, acting on Mr. Love’s instructions, reportedly administered both oral and intravenous medications to Shemite just 24 hours before her death.

In a statement to investigators, the pharmacist admitted that she did not check any vital signs or medical records and warned Mr. Love that Shemite’s condition was critical.

Despite the advice to seek urgent medical attention, Mr. Love allegedly refused, leading to her eventual death in the same bedroom.

More alarmingly, authorities now report that Mr. Love has vanished. All known contact lines associated with him have been switched off, raising concerns that he may have received inside help to evade justice.

The statement from the family condemns the police officers who allegedly released him initially and calls for him to be declared “WANTED.”

Meanwhile, the suspect has reportedly taken to social media to deflect blame, accusing Shemitte’s family of breaking into her home. Family sources have denied these claims, pointing out that the house was accessible to them at the time of her death.

“This man is dangerous and should be declared WANTED,” the family said, expressing deep frustration over the delay in apprehending the suspect.

They also warned the public against falling for misleading narratives being peddled online to obscure the facts or intimidate law enforcement from pursuing justice.

“This is a drowning man using any available straw to stay afloat,” Chief Nwakalo-Imu said. “Justice must be served.”

The case continues to spark outrage across Delta State and beyond, with many calling for a transparent, independent investigation and the immediate re-arrest of the suspect.

The IGP’s office has yet to release an official statement regarding the escape or progress in the manhunt.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright, stated that the case has been transferred to the Force Headquarters, and as such, he is no longer authorized to comment on the matter.

He further clarified that the individual in question did not escape from custody but merely jumped bail.

Hear him: “Case has been transferred to force headquarters, so I am not longer empowered to comment on it.

“He only jumped bail. That’s not escape from custody”, he clarified

Meanwhile, the final burial rites for the late 48-year-old Shemite Winifred (Nwakalo) Bello, former aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Ugo Fufu 1 of Ebu Kingdom, have been formally scheduled, has been fixed for Wednesday 25, June 2025.
