In a chilling case of child trafficking, operatives of the Ekpan Police Division, Delta State, have arrested a 49-year-old woman, Mrs. Joy Temitope Oyetimi, for the abduction of a two-month-old baby, whom she allegedly stole after drugging the mother during a supposed business trip.
According to the Delta State Police Command, the incident occurred on February 16, 2025, when the unsuspecting 20-year-old mother (name withheld) accompanied the suspect on a trip from Koko to Warri.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda on Thursday May 15, 2025, in Asaba, the State Capital.
He said along the way, Mrs. Oyetimi offered her a juice laced with sedatives.
The young mother fell unconscious, and upon waking, discovered that her baby had been taken.
The matter was formally reported to the Ekpan Police Station on April 7, 2025, by the child’s father.
Acting on the intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) launched a swift, intelligence-driven investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect.
During interrogation, Mrs. Oyetimi confessed to the abduction. The baby, now five months old, was successfully rescued and reunited with his parents in good health.
The suspect is currently in police custody, and further investigation is ongoing to determine whether she is linked to a wider child trafficking syndicate.
The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society and called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
